The Shrapnel Memorial is a statue that exists on the Illyriad world map at coordinates -57|-115 on the southwest border of Middle Kingdom and Tor Carrock.
The Memorial was established in October of 1033 by Illyrian reckoning (2025 A.D.) in memory of Shrapnel, a legendary player and the founder of Shrapnel’s Free Defense Union [FDU-S]. In an unusual development that has never repeated itself in Illyriad’s history, the game developers knew the player behind the Shrapnel account and were able to confirm his passing, as noted by GM Stormcrow on October 10 of that year:
Hi all,
We were informed today by a third-party forum administrator that the UK1 Illyriad player you all know as Shrapnel (or his alter-ego, Grog) died on Friday the 8th of October.

The statue can be visited by any type of game unit, upon which the player will receive as message: “In memory of Shrapnel, great leader, great individual and a great friend, who moved on to the Great Adventure beyond but left a lucky few with great memories and the rest of us with a noble philosophy.“
